1) бесконтактный датчик [приближения]датчик, способный обнаруживать присутствие поблизости объектов без физического контакта с ними, - благодаря созданию электромагнитного или электростатического поля либо формированию луча (например, инфракрасного) и восприятию изменений поля или отражённого сигнала при приближении к целевому объекту. Для разных объектов требуются разные датчики: так, для пластиковых объектов подойдут ёмкостные или фотоэлектрические датчики (photoelectric sensor), а индуктивные датчики (inductive sensor) могут обнаруживать только металлические объекты. Например, magnetic proximity sensor - бесконтактный магнитный датчик (см. тж. E-field radiation, electrostatic field, optical proximity sensor).
